Selling or Part-Exchanging Your Motorhome? The Paperwork to Have Ready

16th September 2026

Thinking about selling or part-exchanging your motorhome? Having the right paperwork together can make the process much easier and gives a potential buyer a clearer picture of the vehicle’s history.

If you’re part-exchanging your motorhome with RS, you don’t need to arrange a new service, habitation check or MOT before bringing it to us. However, keeping a record of previous work and maintenance is still important.

1. Your V5C

The V5C registration document is one of the most important documents to have. Make sure the details are correct and that the vehicle is registered to you.

If you’re selling or part-exchanging the motorhome, the relevant section of the V5C will need to be completed part of the transfer process.

2. MOT History

Keep a record of your motorhome’s MOT history. Previous MOTs can help show how the vehicle has been maintained and highlight any advisories or work that has been carried out.

You don’t need to arrange a new MOT before bringing the vehicle to RS. When a motorhome is sold through RS, a new MOT is carried out as part of the vehicle’s preparation for sale.

3. Mechanical & Habitation Service History

Service records are valuable when selling or part-exchanging a motorhome. Keep invoices, service documents and any records showing work that has a been carried out.

The same applies to habitation servicing. Records of checks and maintenance to the living area, gas, electrical and water systems can all help demonstrate how the motorhome has been looked after.

You don’t need to arrange new services before bringing your motorhome to RS. As part of our preparation for sale, pre-owned motorhomes receive:

  • Full Mechanical Service
  • Habitation Service
  • New MOT
  • 12 months warranty

Having the previous history is still useful, as it gives us and the eventual buyer a better understanding of the vehicle’s background.

4. Keep Receipts for Upgrades

If you’ve invested in upgrades or improvements, keep the receipts and paperwork.

This could include things such as:

  • Solar panels or lithium batteries
  • Heating or electrical upgrades
  • New tyres
  • Entertainment systems
  • Awnings
  • Habitation improvements
  • Mechanical work or repairs

These details can help show what has been added or replaced during your ownership.

5. Manuals & Other Paperwork

It’s worth keeping any original handbooks, appliance manuals, spare keys, warranties and other paperwork that came with the motorhome.

You don’t need a huge folder of paperwork, but the more organised the history is, the easier it is to understand the vehicle’s ownership and maintenance.

What Happens When You Part-Exchange with RS?

When a pre-owned motorhome comes into RS, we carry out our own preparation process before it is sold.

We assess the motorhome based on its age, mileage, condition, specification, history and overall market appeal. We then prepare it for its next owner, including a Full Mechanical Service, Habitation Service and new MOT, along with 12 months warranty.

So, you don’t need to spend money getting the motorhome fully prepared before bringing it to us.

What matters most is being able to tell us about the vehicle’s history and how it has been looked after. A motorhome with a well-documented service and maintenance history, backed up by receipts and supporting paperwork, can also give prospective buyers greater confidence when they are considering their next motorhome.
